Santa Margherita Ligure is a beautiful old resort town favoured by well-to-do Italians and other Europeans. We were told it has everything a Riviera playground should have - plenty of palm trees and attractive hotels, cafes and a marina packed with yachts. Of course this we could see!
She is very graceful, which for many Italians represents a perfect base on the Italian Riviera. It is more spacious than the Cinque Terre, less glitzy than San Remo and more relaxing than Genoa and its environs.
This town dates back to AD262, and has had many names, including Porto Napoleone in 1812 - Napolean's idea!! She was given her current name in 1893 by Vittorio Emanualle 11.

In Piazza Caprera stands a monument of Christopher Columbus - it is debated quite heavily whether he was born in this town or not!!

Another monument below - Giuseppe Garibaldi - I just got a kick out of it, as it looks like this warrior is pointing at Mamma's laundry.
